  S&P 500 Index Dividend Payout Profile

  1. As of 6/8/20, 381 of the constituents in the S&P 500 Index distributed a cash dividend to shareholders. There are currently 505 stocks in the index. 
  2. For comparative purposes, since 1980, the highest number of dividend-paying stocks in the S&P 500 Index at year-end was 469 (1980), while the lowest number was 351 (2001 & 2002), according to S&P Dow Jones Indices.
  3. Due to the economic fallout from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, 41 companies in the S&P 500 Index have suspended their dividend distributions so far this year. 
  4. As indicated in the chart, Information Technology, Financials and Health Care contributed the most to the S&P 500 Index's dividend payout at 17.26%, 15.03% and 14.26%, respectively, as of 6/8/20 (see table).
  5. As of 6/9/20, data from Bloomberg indicates that the total dividend payments from the constituents in the S&P 500 Index will total an estimated $59.08 per share in 2020, up from $58.69 (record high) in 2019. The estimate for 2021 is $61.83.
  6. The S&P 500 Index sector weightings are as follows (6/9/20): 25.97% (Information Technology); 14.53% (Health Care); 11.04% (Financials); 10.79% (Communication Services); 10.65% (Consumer Discretionary); 8.32% (Industrials); 6.89% (Consumer Staples); 3.20% (Energy); 3.14% (Utilities); 2.91% (Real Estate); and 2.56% (Materials), according to Bloomberg.
