  1. The S&P 500, S&P MidCap 400 and S&P SmallCap 600 Indices set all-time closing highs on 1/8/18, according to data from Bloomberg.
  2. Today's chart is intended to give those investors concerned about major stock indices trading at or near their record highs some visual perspective on where equity analysts think earnings are headed.
  3. With respect to the S&P 500 Index, as of 1/8/18, earnings were projected to rise from $29.27 in Q1'17 to an estimated $38.78 in Q4'18, or a potential increase of 32.49%.
  4. With respect to the S&P MidCap 400 Index, as of 1/8/18, earnings were projected to rise from $17.03 in Q1'17 to an estimated $25.94 in Q4'18, or a potential increase of 52.32%.
  5. With respect to the S&P SmallCap 600 Index, as of 1/8/18, earnings were projected to rise from $7.45 in Q1'17 to an estimated $12.47 in Q4'18, or a potential increase of 67.38%.
  6. We believe that corporate earnings drive the direction of stock prices over time, especially when the major indices are trading at or near record highs.
